Arms Outstretched

Vincent_van_Gogh_-_First_Steps,_after_Millet

Vincent van Gogh, First Steps, after Millet, 1890, Oil on canvas, 28 1/2 x 35 7/8in. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.

Whatever anxieties, fears, unknowns you may be staring down today, I pray these words might reach you and remind you that God is a good father who says many patient times, “Do not fear.”

You stand in the midst of the unknown, already there with arms outstretched to catch me, like a daddy proudly watching his daughter take her first steps: “Come on. I’ve got you. Just a little further. You’re doing it. I’m right here. I’ll catch you.”

You don’t ask me to go it alone. You’re already there saying, “This is going to be so good, I can’t wait for you to see it. I’m getting it all ready for you. Trust me. I still have things to work out for your good, and I want you to wait here. Don’t run ahead, it won’t be ready yet. Just wait here. I’m waiting right beside you, and I’ll take you when it’s right. I can hardly wait for you to see all I’ve prepared for each of you here. It’s so good because I love you this much.

“First Steps” is a wonderful choice for an illustration. So sweet to see the hard-working farmer has dropped his shovel to use his arms for encouraging his daughter! How excited he is. How excited God is when we move toward Him on our shaky legs.

My Dear Kimberly, your words & verses are exactly what I needed to hear. Van Gogh’s painting is such a beautiful vision of Gods love for us. These words are helping today & will for the weeks ahead. Thank you for sharing.
